Jachung Woodcraft Training Centre

Training and Production Center for Traditional Tibetan Woodcarving and Furniture Making

Apprenticeship Program

The training program lasts for five years. During the first three years, the apprentice is a student, learning the skills of the trade. In the final two years, the apprentice is considered more like a skilled employee and uses his skills in return for a salary.

Apprentices are provided with room and board and, in the first years, 250 rupees per month as pocket money. When they have completed their training term, they will have a skill and working experience which will allow them to support themselves and their families as well as to contribute to their communities for the rest of their lives.

Entering apprentices are required to post a deposit of 50,000 rupees if they or their families have the means to do so. This amount will be refunded at the successful completion of the apprentice’s 5-year term. It will, however, be forfeited if the apprentice fails to complete the program or is dismissed for noncompliance with Jachung Woodcraft Centre’s rules.

An apprentice from a poor family can be admitted without posting any deposit. In such cases, the prospective apprentice must provide a supporting letter from his settlement officer, signed by his parent or guardian who agrees to pay 50,000 rupees as a fine if the student is dismissed for noncompliance with the center’s rules or does not complete his training period.

As described above, apprentices do not pay any fees for their training and are, in fact, given full room, board, and spending money by Tsering Nyima. The funds to provide these facilities come only from the sale of the woodcraft center’s fine products and from Tsering Nyima’s commitment to benefit his students. Because of his own limited resources, admission is limited at this time to 10 apprentices, though he receives many more requests for admission each year. In order to make this precious training available to more young Tibetans, external financial support in the form of apprentice sponsorships would be necessary. Please contact Tsering Nyima if you are interested in contributing in this way.
