Commissioning Work

My work is produced primarily on commission. Particularly because each thangka takes several months to complete, it works better to spend that time creating an image specially suited to a particular client.

Some clients (particularly those who are Buddhist practitioners) specify the sacred image that they want according to their own practice and intentions. With other clients, I discuss the possibilities and we decide together based on their interests, dispositions, color preferences, qualities they wish to emphasize, etc.

A typical thangka requires four to six months of full-time work and costs roughly between $4,000 and $7,000, depending on the amount of detail and, to a lesser extent, on the size as it affects the quantity of materials required. High-quality silk and gold materials  are used throughout, employing 100% silk to the extent possible. Images with very little ornamentation such as the simple “Buddha Shakyamuni” (1999) take less time and, therefore, cost less. Smaller, nonfigurative images such as “Lotus” and “Syllables” can be created in one week and sell for approximately $300.
